# The Stages of Clay: Slip, Plastic, Leather-Hard, Bone Dry, Bisque

> Clay passes through five workable states. Trim at leather-hard, join at soft leather-hard, never carve bone dry, and never fire anything that still feels cool.

Almost every piece of pottery advice contains a hidden condition: *at the right stage*. Attach a handle at the wrong stage and it falls off. Trim at the wrong stage and you tear the pot or blunt your tool. Learning to read the stages by touch is the single fastest way to stop making mysterious mistakes.

> **From the studio:** The cheek test sounds like folklore until you try it on a pot you were sure was dry. Mine felt bone dry in the hand and distinctly cool against my face, and the extra day I gave it is probably the reason it came out of the bisque in one piece rather than three.

## Slip

Clay suspended in water, from a pourable cream to a thick slurry. Used for casting into plaster moulds, for decorating (engobes), and — thickened — as the glue in [score-and-[slip](/blog/what-is-slip-in-pottery) joins](/blog/score-and-slip-joins).

**You can**: cast, paint, trail, join.
**You cannot**: build anything that holds its own shape.

Slip made from the same clay body as your piece shrinks at the same rate. Slip from a different body does not, and that is where decoration flakes off.

## Plastic (workable)

The stage clay arrives in. It holds a shape but bends without tearing. Roll a coil and wrap it around your finger: plastic clay makes the bend with no cracks along the outside of the curve.

**You can**: throw, coil, pinch, slab-build, press into moulds.
**You cannot**: trim, carve detail, or stack anything on it.

Too soft is as much a problem as too hard. Clay that slumps under its own weight has too much water — wedge it on a plaster bat or a dry board for twenty minutes.

## Leather-hard

The most important stage, and really a range. The clay is stiff enough to hold its shape when handled but still holds moisture. It cuts cleanly rather than smearing, and a fingernail leaves a mark without sinking in.

It is worth splitting into two:

**Soft leather-hard** — cool to the touch, slightly yielding, darker in colour. This is when you attach handles, spouts and feet, and when you join slabs. Both halves of any join should be at this stage.

**Firm leather-hard** — holds a crisp edge, barely yields, lighter in colour. This is when you trim on the wheel, carve, burnish and stamp.

**You can**: trim, carve, join, burnish, apply slip decoration.
**You cannot**: reshape the form, or re-wet a whole piece evenly without risking cracks.

If a piece stiffens past the stage you need, wrap it in plastic with a damp cloth (not touching the clay) and leave it overnight. Moisture equalises through the wall and it comes back down. Spraying the surface does not work — you get a wet skin over a dry body, which is exactly the gradient that cracks.

## Bone dry (greenware)

All the free water has evaporated. The clay is pale, brittle, chalky, and roughly the same temperature as the room. This is the fragile stage — a bone dry pot will snap if you look at it wrong.

**You can**: sand lightly with a damp sponge or fine mesh, and fire it.
**You cannot**: carve, join, or add anything wet. Water on bone dry clay causes it to swell locally and crack.

**Do not fire clay that still feels cool.** Chemically bound water is driven off around 500 °C, but *free* water turns to steam near 100 °C, and steam trapped inside a wall will blow the piece — and its neighbours — apart. If in doubt, wait another day, or candle the kiln at 90–100 °C for several hours before the real climb.

## Bisque

The first firing, usually to cone 06–04 (roughly 1000 °C). The clay has passed through quartz inversion and the chemical water is gone, so it can no longer be dissolved back into slip. It stays porous, which is exactly the point: porous bisque sucks glaze water out of the glaze and leaves an even coat on the surface.

**You can**: glaze, sand safely, handle without fear.
**You cannot**: reclaim it, carve it, or re-join it.

Bisque ware that has been handled with greasy fingers will resist glaze in patches. Wipe with a damp sponge before glazing and let it dry.

## After bisque: vitrification

The glaze firing takes the body to maturity, where the clay particles partially fuse. Stoneware fired to its rated cone absorbs under about 1% water and rings when tapped. Underfired stoneware absorbs water, stains, and can eventually crack from freeze–thaw or from moisture reaching a crazed glaze.

The whole skill is patience plus one test: touch it to your cheek. Cool means water. Water means wait.

## Moving clay backwards through the stages

Until it is fired, every stage is reversible, which is more useful than beginners expect.

**Firm leather-hard back to soft.** Wrap the piece in plastic with a damp cloth inside the wrapping but not touching the clay, and leave it overnight. Moisture equalises through the wall. Spraying the surface does not work — it gives you a wet skin over a dry body, which is the exact gradient that cracks.

**Leather-hard back to plastic.** Cut it up, wedge it, and it is workable clay again.

**Bone dry back to slip.** Break it small, cover with water, and it collapses on its own within hours. Bone dry clay slakes faster than any other state.

**Slip back to plastic.** Spread it on plaster until it stiffens, then wedge.

The one-way door is the kiln. Above roughly 500 °C the chemically bound water leaves the mineral structure permanently, and no amount of soaking will bring it back. Everything before that point is recoverable, which is why a pottery studio produces almost no waste.

## Frequently asked questions

**How do you tell if clay is bone dry?**

Hold it against your cheek. Damp clay feels noticeably cool because evaporation is still pulling heat out of it. Bone dry clay feels the same temperature as the room.

**Can you rehydrate bone dry clay?**

Unfired clay, yes — break it into small pieces, cover with water, let it slake down completely, then dry it back to workable stiffness on plaster or drywall. Once bisque fired it can never go back.

**What is greenware?**

Any unfired clay object, from freshly made to bone dry. It is called green because it has not yet been through a kiln.
